Antral Follicle Count Ultrasound Scan
Antral Follicle Count Ultrasound Scan
Many couples who are having fertility treatment abroad, or at a location some distance from their own home within the UK, want the facility to access an ultrasound scan on a particular day of the menstrual cycle.
Cherish-UK are able to perform the specialist scan and email the result to the chosen fertility clinic. This allows more flexibility for couples and reduces the amount of time spent away from home during the treatment cycle.
Usually clinics request a scan to assess antral follicle count and or a scan to assess endometrial thickness and follicular development.
What is antral follicle count?
Women are born with all of their eggs; from the age of about 25 years the pool of eggs starts to diminish and can never be replenished. It takes 3-6 months for eggs to develop and mature. Eggs develop within follicles, the follicles start to mature becoming pre-antral and then become an antral follicle. Antral follicles are visible by vaginal ultrasound. By performing a scan early in the menstrual cycle (day 2-4), ovarian reserve can be assessed.
Generally, less than 4 antral follicles represent an extremely low count with no or very poor response to ovarian stimulation expected. 11-20 antral follicles represent a normal count. These are guidelines only; interpretation of results is never done in isolation. Other results will be considered along with the antral follicle count result before a treatment regime is considered.
During your scan, we will explain the findings to you and following your scan we will give you your images and email the report to you. We will email the report to your chosen clinic and if requested we will we email your images to your clinic.
