Endometrial Receptivity Analysis
Endometrial Receptivity Analysis
The Endometrial Receptivity Analysis (ERA) test is a pioneering new method of assessing when the endometrium (womb lining) is most receptive. This allows Clinicians to personalise the timing of embryo transfer to maximised chances of implantation.
Receptivity of the endometrium is a crucial factor in determining the success of IVF treatment. During IVF treatment, Clinicians have to estimate when the endometrium has reached the optimal time to introduce the embryo into the womb based on ultrasound scan results. This method does not always account for the differences in individual cycle patterns which means that not every woman’s endometrium will be at its most receptive at the same time. Three in every ten patients have displaced window of implantation.
By taking a small biopsy of the endometrium, the ERA test allows the analysis of 236 genes, to look for the genes that are vital to implantation that should be ‘switched on’ when the lining is receptive to receive an embryo. This then allows the timing of embryo transfer to be altered and personalised according to the ERA result to maximise the outcome.
This test has shown not to discriminate between fertile and infertile patients and it does not guarantee a successful outcome after personalised embryo transfer.
Frequently Asked Questions:
Until recently there has been no way of accurately assessing whether the endometrium is at its most receptive. Scientists now know that certain genes are ‘switched on’ when the endometrium is receptive and they can pinpoint these genes and check whether they are ‘switched on’ or not. This gives a good idea of whether the endometrium is ‘pre-receptive’, receptive’ or ‘post-receptive’. It gives specific personalised information regarding the optimal time for embryo transfer and increases chances of successful embryo transfer and of achieving high success rates.
It is particularly useful for women with repeated implantation failure as a displaced window of implantation is detected in approximately 25% of these patients.
The ERA test will be carried out in the month prior to the treatment cycle, and the results will determine the exact timing of the embryo transfer in the month of treatment. The results are valid for up to 2 years.
To perform ERA it is necessary to take an endometrial biopsy from women in their natural cycle or hormone replacement therapy cycles, at a time corresponding to the phase of endometrial receptivity.
The endometrium is receptive when it is ready for the embryo implantation. This occurs around days 19-21 in each menstrual cycle of a fertile woman. This period of receptivity is called the window of implantation.
During a natural cycle this occurs seven days after the LH (Lutenising Hormone) surge OR after five full days of progesterone supplementation in Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) cycles. After the biopsy is taken it is immediately introduced into a tube, which contains fluid to preserve the tissue, and sent to IGENOMIX Laboratory in America for testing.
Once the sample is received by IGENOMIX, it takes approximately 10-14 working days for the results to be available. Your results will be sent to you, and if requested your clinic, via email.
